The countdown to midnight has begun. Halo:Reach goes live worldwide tonight and gamers will be up late, waiting in line to snag a copy and get some early games in.
Xbox Live is prepping gamers for the release and is currently offering everybody a free Halo inspired theme download. A special promotion called Invasion Week will be starting tomorrow and running for approximately a week.
From September 14 to September 20, Invasion Week will be assaulting and controlling Xbox Live. Including activities, new gear, prizes, content and even a chance to play with members of Bungie, it seems like there will be something for every Halo fan to enjoy. Additionally, there will be a free ‘Invasion’ theme up for grabs to all Xbox Live members.
Best Buy is offering gamers a $20 gift card with every Reach purchase (Including the Xbox 360 Reach-inspired bundle). This is a great option for folks that didn’t end up pre-ordering their copy as Best Buy is usually stocked up and rarely runs out of copies on release day. Most game retailers nationwide are staying open late tonight to accommodate early purchases. GameStop usually draws quite a crowd to their early releases so I’m assuming a line will form rather early. WalMart and Best Buy are usually a bit more subdued and might be a better option if you are looking to avoid a crowd.
Bungie uploaded their final batch of pre-release videos to the newly revamped Bungie.net over the weekend – the first gives additional insight into the campaign story and the second showcases a round of Firefight. Enjoy the videos and we’ll see you online tonight!

Google is making a major update their search engine in the next few days. I’m sure you are asking yourself “how the heck can they really update something that is already so simple?” Well here is how. Instead of typing a query and hitting the Enter key to initiate your search, Google will start delivering results in real time as you type. The new update has been dubbed Google Instant.
From Google:
Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. We are pushing the limits of our technology and infrastructure to help you get better search results, faster. Our key technical insight was that people type slowly, but read quickly, typically taking 300 milliseconds between keystrokes, but only 30 milliseconds (a tenth of the time!) to glance at another part of the page. This means that you can scan a results page while you type.
The most obvious change is that you get to the right content much faster than before because you don’t have to finish typing your full search term, or even press “search.” Another shift is that seeing results as you type helps you formulate a better search term by providing instant feedback. You can now adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want. In time, we may wonder how search ever worked in any other way.
Learn more about this new technology in the video linked below and try Google Instant for yourself.

Excitement and anticipation is at an all-time high for all the Bungie fans worldwide as we approach the “Se7en Days Left” milestone before the long-awaited Halo: Reach goes live. The number 7 is a consistent theme that runs through all of Bungie’s projects so today is a bit of a special milestone for the studio and the fans that have been waiting over a year – well, months since the Beta – for a new Halo title.
Promising to be Bungie’s swan song for the Halo series (don’t fret, I think they said the same thing about Halo 3 and Halo: ODST), Halo: Reach will bring together all the good (and a few bad) elements of past Halo’s and package them together in one, polished, product. If the public Beta test from earlier this year was any indication… gamers worldwide are in for an exciting time filled with hours of fragging, flag capturing, teabagging and trash talking. Oh yea, there is a pretty snazzy Campaign mode that will tell the story of the ill-fated human colony, Reach. But honestly, who cares about the story, right?
Campaign
The campaign mode of Halo: Reach (similar to Halo: ODST) moves away from telling the traditional tale of Halo’s main protagonist – the Master Chief – and, instead, follows a small team of elite human supersoldiers. The game is set in the year 2552 and finds humanity locked into a familiar struggle with the alien Covenant. Players take control of a soldier known only as Noble 6 and are thrust head-first into the battle for the world of Reach.
From Wikipedia:
Reach takes place in a futuristic science fiction setting during the year 2552, shortly before the events of the 2001 video game Halo: Combat Evolved. Humans, under the auspices of the United Nations Space Command (UNSC), have been waging a long war against a collective of alien races known as the Covenant. By the events of Reach, almost all of humanity’s interstellar colonies have fallen. Reach itself is an Earthlike colony that serves as the UNSC’s main military hub. In addition to the military presence, the colony is home to over 700 million civilians.
The game follows the actions of Noble Team, a UNSC special operations unit composed of elite supersoldiers known as Spartans. Players assume the role of an unnamed new addition to the team, identified by the call sign Noble 6. Noble Team’s leader is Carter-A259, a no-nonsense soldier. His second-in-command, Kat-B320, has a bionic arm; together, Carter and Kat are the only two remaining original members of Noble Team. The other members include heavy weapons specialist Jorge-052, Emile-A239, and marksman Jun-A266.
Multiplayer
While the Campaign mode will surely showcase and amazing story and the finest graphics available on the Xbox 360, we all know the REAL thing that keeps people coming back for months - and years - after the release of a game is the Multiplayer. Halo: Reach will be familiar experience to anybody that has played any of Bungie’s previous Halo titles with the exception of a few notable changes.
Dual-wielding is GONE. No more plasma-pistol + SMG nonsense. I’m a huge fan of this change as dual-wielding weapons really pushed the ‘close quarters’ aspect of the game, as opposed to accurate medium-to-long-distance shooting, and often times was just cheesy as hell.
Halo 3′s equipment system is also gone (cheers), instead being replaced by Loadouts that feature persistent Armor Abilities that each player can pick and choose from between spawns (jeers). This new system is pretty similar to how Call of Duty: Modern Warfare operates with one major difference. Modern Warfare allows the player to setup custom builds ahead of time for use in-game. Halo: Reach’s Loadouts are set ahead of time based on the map and gametype being played. While this may seem limiting, it’s actually a good idea as it allows Bungie to balance certain gametypes without worrying about the extra variable that certain Armor Abilities bring. Imagine being able to use Armor Lock in a King of the Hill game… nobody would use anything else and the gameplay would become stale.
Armor Abilities are as follows:
Players will find the traditional Slayer, King of the Hill, Capture the Flag and Oddball game types making a glorious return in addition to a couple new variants described in detail below.
Headhunter is a new Free For All (FFA) game type that features a ‘resource gathering’ system mixed with traditional Slayer gameplay. Upon each death, a flaming skull will fly out of the fragged player’s body. The goal of the game type is to kill your opponents, gather up the resulting skulls and ‘bank’ the skulls in a defined location that, depending on the specific variant, moves around the map. The real twist comes from the fact that as you pick up more and more skulls, players will be gunning for you because all of your accumulated skulls will spill out of your body upon death. The game then becomes a fine balancing act between gathering skulls and making sure to ‘bank’ the skulls you have gathered before your opponents can kill you and steal all of your un-banked skulls. This game type was definitely fun but extremely frustrating and nerve-wracking at the same time. There was nothing worse than having a nice cache of skulls, running to the area to bank your skulls… and then being killed right before you could complete the task. Epic Fail indeed.
Stockpile is a new team-based game type that has players fighting for 3 flags that spawn in a neutral position on the map every minute. The goal of the game type is to grab the flags, bring them back to a pre-defined capture spot and then defend the capture spot for a given amount of time (~1 minute) before the game registers your flags as being ‘captured.’ Its a bit of a twist on Capture the Flag and a Territories based game type. New flags will spawn every minute – on the minute- so the action is always a fast and furious balance of offense (trying to prevent your opponents from capping flags at their base) and defense (defending the flags you’ve managed to get back to your base from attacking opponents). This game type relies on great communication between team members as you need to maintain a solid defense while a couple of your teammates seek out the opponents base to prevent them from capping. This game type was fun to play during the Beta but was severely imbalanced on the 2 maps it was featured on in the Beta.
Invasion is a new 6 vs. 6 gametype that pits a team of attacking Elites (advanced Covenent soldiers) against a team of defending Spartans in an epic three-stage battle. The goal for the Elites is to first secure a territory that unlocks a navigation core. The elites must then attack their way towards the core and finally transport the core to a dropship to end the game. The Spartan team basically defends against these waves of attack. As each objective is completed by the Elites, new areas of the map open up and new Loadouts (with corresponding Armor Abilities) are available to both sides. I only played this a couple times in the Beta and, frankly, it wasn’t for me. The maps seem massive… often times TOO massive to really enjoy. There is nothing worse than searching around for where the action is happening on a map when you spawn and then having to RUN all the way over to said action. I’m sure fans of the Big Team Battle playlist will eat this game up.
Conclusions
Lets be honest here, this game WILL be the top selling console game of the year, if not the top selling game regardless of platform. Truly an amazing feat considering it is being released in September. The only thing that might give Bungie a run for the money is Blizzard’s new Cataclysm expansion for World of Warcraft (no release date announced yet, rumors put it sometime in November).
The Campaign seems interesting enough and I’m sure the game play will tell a fine, if not a bit cliche, story. The new changes to the multiplayer are exciting and worrisome at the same time. I have a feeling that the high-end competitive scene will just take out all of the Armor Abilities and create gametypes more akin to earlier titles. I also forsee several abilities being abused which could create extremely frustrating games for novice players. Either way, I’ll probably grab a copy sometime next week - my days of waiting in line at midnight are well behind me - and dive in head first.

Its a huge day for all the Apple fans in the world as, once again, Steve Jobs takes the stage, surrounded in a cloud of mystery, and gives the world an update on whats happening down in Cupertino. Apparently the event is streaming live on Apple’s website but I’m unable to view it on my machine (OSX required for streaming video?). Anywhoo, Engadget is blogging live with great photos and technology stalwart Leo Laporte (who, apparently, wasn’t invited to this event) is broadcasting live from his website.
iPod Touch
The first piece of interesting news is the updates to the iPod Touch. The new Touch will feature Apple’s Retina display, a video camera, the ability to use the FaceTime app (video chat) and an upgraded processor that will help power new games. It also appears as though Apple has added some sort of ‘matchmaking’ system (Game Center) that will allow gamers to connect with other gamers.
iPod Nano
The biggest announcement so far is the new iPod Nano. Apple seems to be intent on removing all buttons from their devices because now the Nano (The little iPod that could) features OMG TOUCH SCREEN TECHNOLOGY (those with “fat finger” syndrome need not apply)! It almost reminds me of a Dick Tracy style wristwatch and I’m sure some savvy fan will develop some sort of wristband soon enough.
iTunes 10
iTunes 10 will finally arrive accompanied by a new, fancy, LOGO! Unbelievably this was a significant part of the presentation (~5 mins worth out of a 60 min keynote) and the internets are buzzing.
Ping
Now the REALLY big iTunes news. One of the new features shipping with iTunes 10 will be the inclusion of a new ‘social network’ called Ping. This update should be out sometime later today so everybody can download and add yet ANOTHER social network notch on their virtual bedpost. The big news that has all the fanboys squealing is Ping is the ONLY social network that will have a ‘real’ Steve Jobs account (This was reiterated several times by Steve himself… I’m not sure if I buy it). I wonder if he will accept my friend request…
AppleTV
Steve is currently talking about the new AppleTV, which unfortunately appears to be a minor update to a piece of technology that was (imo) a stinker out of the gate. NO app support whatsoever… but hey! Its got the same Netflix my Xbox 360 had circa 2008. I foresee a future Google product being developed to directly compete with this…
Chris Martin
It appears as though the Event is over now. Coldplay’s Chris Martin (who outdid ALL fanboys worldwide by naming his first child Apple) is playing a few tunes solo to close out the presentation. I was unaware that Coldplay or Chris Martin were even relevant at this point in time but if Apple says he is… I suppose he probably is. He did close out with a pretty good Apple zinger though:
Chris Martin: “This is a new song we’re doing, it’s called Coldplay 2.6. It features 7 chords. None of our competitors have it. Jony Ive designed it. It’s in the key of iMinor.”

I’ve been messing around with HTML5 quite a bit in the past few months and found a really cool resource. Uber LAMP developer Josh Duck put together this really cool Periodic Table of the Elements and filled it up with all the ‘elements’ of HTML5. Definitely a nice resource to keep bookmarked while I’m mucking around with the new cool tags… but probably won’t replace the VisiBone chart on my wall (sigh, someday that thing will be gone).

Simply… wow. This collaboration between the brains at Google and the creative folks in The Arcade Fire is stunning. Titled “The Wilderness Downtown,” this video (interactive experience really) really demonstrates the power of HTML5 in regards to video and audio on the web. Extremely interactive and entertaining at the same time.
Note: Close ALL CPU intensive programs and make sure you are running this in a single tab within Google Chrome (or any HTML5 savvy web browser). This is, after all, an experiment.

The fine folks over at Major League Gaming are holding their 50th event this weekend in the “City of Oaks,” Raleigh, N.C. All the top pros gamers are gathering for one of the biggest events of the year. Halo 3, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Tekken 6, World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2 are all being represented throughout the course of the event.
The best part… MLG streams a TON of live games FOR FREE!!! Each game has a dedicated channel on the main MLG homepage and all feature a dedicated video stream (with the exception of Super Smash Brothers Brawl – Nintendo doesn’t like to play nice apparently).

Skill Level: Moderate
I was doing some Photoshop work earlier today and figured I’d give a quick rundown on the Quick Mask [Q] function contained within Photoshop and how it can be utilized to create non-destructive masks. Quick Masks work great for doing advanced masking (think: isolating a model with hair blowing in the wind, etc.) and often are the better option from the traditional Magic Wand and Marquee tools. Basically using the Quick Mask function allows you to utilize the brushes in Photoshop to “paint” your mask over the image you are isolating giving you greater degrees of control.
Lets take a look at this image I started with:
A pretty basic image of this football player either taunting his opponents or running scared for his life (the expression on his face could be either in my opinion). My thought is that I want to isolate this player’s upper torso and arms for use in another project. Utilizing the Magic Wand or Marquee tools would be an exercise in frustration as the background is filled with all sorts of nonsense and noise. I might be able to get a decent selection path around the upper part of the player, but once you get down towards his mid-section things get a big trickier. Quick Masks to the rescue!
Step 1:
Make sure your color selector is set to the default “black and white” by clicking the little white and black box next to it. All masking done in Photoshop is based on values of black and white (and the grey’s in between) so we want to make sure we are using pure colors when painting our mask. Once you’ve defaulted out your color selector, hit the [Q] key to bring your image into Quick Mask mode (Photoshop should alert you that you are in Quick Mask mode along the top of your image).
Step 2:
Once you’ve moved into Quick Mask mode, select your brush tool [B] and pick a standard round, hard-edged, brush from your pallet. Using this brush, paint around the inside edges of your subject (see image below). DON’T PANIC. You will notice that you are painting a transparent hue of Red upon your image. This red is simply showing you the ‘black’ part (ie. the part being masked out) of your mask. I like to go around my subject and define the outline I’m working with first. Once I’ve done this, my project looks like this (Note: I switched the image to Greyscale just to show the initial Quick Mask outline, It was a bit tough to see due to the Shanley Deacon red in this player’s uniform):
Again, I’m using this brush to define the outer edge of my mask.
Step 3:
Once I’ve defined my outer edge, I like to switch into my paint bucket [G] and use it to fill in the shape I’ve defined. You should end up with something looking like this (Note: Colors switched back on):
The area covered in red is the area I’ll be extracting from the photo.
Step 4:
Switch back out of Quick Mask mode by pressing the [Q] hotkey again. You should be presented with a traditional ‘ants marching’ selection path around your image. Select either the Magic Wand [W] or the standard Marquee tool [M] and right-click within your selection. ”Select Inverse” and you should have a rather nice selection around your subject.
Step 5:
Once you have this selection, click the “Add Layer Mask” icon at the bottom of your layers pallet (double check to make sure you have the layer that you want to apply the mask on before you click this button).
Step 6:
You should end up with something similar to this:
OMG FLOATING TORSO FOOTBALL GUY – RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!
Step 7:
Most of the masking work is done at this point, but there is always some clean up work that can be done. Now I know that I want this image to appear over a black background in my final project, so the logical choice is to insert a solid black layer below this selection that will allow me to see if there are any stray pixels that ended up in my selection (there usually is around the edges).
Step 8:
Selecting the actual mask on the layer of the image and using black and white brushes of varying sizes, I like to go around the edges and fine tune my selection (all of this is, of course, non-destructive to your source image because it’s all being done on the mask). Painting with black will allow you to remove any stray pixels around the edge and hitting the [X] key to switch to white will allow you to add any of the source image back.
Final Product:
Once I managed to isolate this player, I brought him into my original project file and did some additional gradient masking to fade out parts of his body to fit in with the image. Frankly, I probably got too ambitious with this Quick Masking considering the amount of this image that made it into the final product but it was still a fun exercise in the end.
Conclusion:
Masks are one of the most powerful tools available to a designer in Photoshop. The Quick Mask tool pushes this tool to the extreme. There are a million amazing things you can do (think: using non-traditional brush shapes to apply masks, etc). Feel free to leave any questions in the comments section below and I’ll do my best to answer them. I hope you enjoyed this Photoshop tutorial.

I was alerted to this really cool website run by the fine folks at Curse gaming. Its called SC2Replayed.com. The site acts as a repository for StarCraft 2 game replays. Everybody from average players to top pros can upload their awesome (or, in my case… awesomely terrible) replays and the community can rate, comment and all the other nonsense that comes along with exposing your gameplay to the world (LOL get trolled).
The really cool part about this website is the fact that you aren’t just downloading a video file of the match (or streaming a video), rather you can download the actual in game replay file that will launch your StarCraft 2 client and allow you to watch the game as a spectator (with all the “god mode” spectator controls: rewind, pause, live game stats, etc).
Just double-click the replay and load into your SC2 client and you should be immediately ported to the game. I love this approach to distributing game replays as it keeps the file sizes minimal (Average game replay file is around 50kb) and fully leverages the game engine to display the replays.
When you start downloading lots of replays, I’ve found the best way to access the files is to install them into my default “Replays” folder, that way I can pick and choose which game I’d like to view without closing and relaunching the game each time.
To install:
For Windows 7 users: Take the .SC2Replay file and drop in in your -
[your username] -> My Documents -> StarCraft II -> Accounts -> [random number folder] -> [another weird random number folder] -> Replays -> Unsaved
I know it probably looks like a crazy path to navigate too, but its really nothing more than locating the StarCraft II folder in your documents and clicking in and exploring around a bit.
Note: this folder holds the account information related to your game – including preferences. Be careful when you are mucking around in these folders and don’t delete anything except old replay files. Unless you feel like taking the time to setup all of your preferences again, that is.
Boot into your SC2 client and choose the replays option in your top menu, the downloaded replays should show alongside any replays you might already have.
Watching top players is one of the single best ways to improve your StarCraft II gameplay. There are so many subtle nuances that separate the pros from the rest of us joes. Thankfully for us, most of the best players are more than willing to share their gameplays and strategy with the rest of the SC2 community, and this webiste is a fine example of that.
